The Best 4th of July Brownies EVER – Rich, Fudgy & Firework-Ready!
A few years ago, I brought a tray of brownies to a Fourth of July cookout because I ran out of time to make the fancy dessert I had planned. I figured they’d be the backup option sitting quietly at the end of the dessert table. Instead, they disappeared before the fireworks even started.
Since then, these brownies have become my go-to patriotic dessert. They’re rich, fudgy, loaded with chocolate flavor, and easy to decorate with red, white, and blue toppings when the holiday rolls around.
Why This Recipe Works
Here’s the thing: nobody wants a dry brownie. What I figured out after plenty of trial and error is that the combination of butter, oil, cocoa powder, and chocolate chips creates an incredibly fudgy texture that stays soft for days. The shiny crackly top doesn’t hurt either.
Ingredient Notes
Dutch-processed cocoa powder gives these brownies a deeper chocolate flavor and darker color. If that’s what you have on hand, use it.
The combination of butter and oil is important. Butter adds flavor, while oil helps keep the brownies moist.
Don’t skip the chocolate chips. They melt into little pockets of chocolate throughout the brownies.
How to Make It
Start by melting the butter in a saucepan or microwave-safe bowl. Stir in the oil and sugar while the mixture is still warm. Let it cool slightly before adding the eggs and vanilla.
Whisk in the eggs until the batter becomes glossy. That’s usually a good sign you’re heading toward that classic crackly brownie top.
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until no streaks remain. Then stir in the chocolate chips.
Pour the batter into a parchment-lined baking pan and spread it evenly. Bake until the center is just set. A few moist crumbs on a toothpick are exactly what you’re looking for.
Allow the brownies to cool completely before cutting. I know it’s tempting to slice them early, but they continue setting as they cool and become much fudgier.
For a patriotic finish, add red, white, and blue sprinkles or candies while the brownies are still slightly warm.
Things I Learned the Hard Way
Overbaking is the fastest way to ruin brownies. They should still seem slightly soft in the center when removed from the oven.
Use parchment paper. It makes removing and cutting the brownies much easier.
Let them cool completely before slicing. Warm brownies are delicious but messy.
A plastic knife surprisingly works well for clean brownie cuts.
Storage & Serving Suggestions
Store brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. They can also be frozen for up to 2 months. Serve them with vanilla ice cream, fresh berries, or a cold glass of milk for an extra-special treat.
