Fireworks Cookies and Cream Cookies – Explosively Delicious & Perfect for the 4th!
A few summers ago, I was in charge of bringing dessert to a Fourth of July block party, and I wanted something more exciting than the usual chocolate chip cookies. I had a package of Oreos in the pantry, some red, white, and blue candies left over from another project, and just enough time to experiment. The result was these Fireworks Cookies and Cream Cookies, and they’ve been requested every year since.
They’re soft in the center, slightly crisp around the edges, packed with cookies-and-cream flavor, and loaded with festive colors that make them perfect for any patriotic celebration.
Why This Recipe Works
Here’s the thing: regular cookies are great, but adding crushed Oreos and white chocolate chips takes them to another level. What I figured out after a few batches is that the Oreo pieces add texture without making the cookies too sweet, while the colorful candies make them look like they belong at a Fourth of July party. They’re fun, easy, and always disappear fast.
Ingredient Notes
I use regular Oreo cookies because they hold their crunch better during baking.
Don’t skip softening the butter. Cold butter won’t cream properly with the sugars, and the cookies won’t have the same soft texture.
For the candies, any red, white, and blue chocolate candies work well. I’ve used patriotic M&M’s several times with great results.
How to Make It
Start by beating the softened butter with both sugars until the mixture becomes light and fluffy. This step takes a few minutes but helps create a soft cookie texture.
Add the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract. The dough should look smooth and creamy at this point.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture until combined. Be careful not to overmix.
Fold in the crushed Oreo cookies, white chocolate chips, and patriotic candies. The dough should be packed with mix-ins in every scoop.
Drop portions of dough onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper. If you’re using patriotic sprinkles, add a few on top before baking.
Bake until the edges are lightly golden while the centers still look slightly soft. They’ll continue setting as they cool.
Let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack. The smell alone will make it difficult to wait.
Things I Learned the Hard Way
Don’t crush the Oreos into fine crumbs. Larger chunks give the cookies better texture and visual appeal.
Avoid overbaking. The cookies may look slightly underdone in the center when you pull them from the oven, but they’ll finish setting as they cool.
If you want bakery-style cookies, chill the dough for 30 minutes before baking.
Save a few candies to press into the tops of the cookies immediately after baking. They look much more colorful that way.
Storage & Serving Suggestions
Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. They also freeze well for up to 2 months. Serve them alongside milk, iced coffee, lemonade, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream during summer celebrations.
