Stars, Stripes, and Sweet Bites Fruit Kabobs
The first time I made these fruit kabobs, it wasn’t because I had some grand dessert plan. It was because I realized I had forgotten to buy a Fourth of July dessert and guests were arriving in less than an hour. I grabbed berries, marshmallows, and skewers from the pantry and started assembling.
What surprised me was how quickly they disappeared. Kids loved the colorful marshmallows, adults appreciated the fresh fruit, and nobody seemed to miss the complicated desserts I usually spend hours making.
Why This Recipe Works
Here’s the thing: summer desserts don’t have to be complicated. These patriotic fruit kabobs combine juicy berries with sweet marshmallows to create a festive red, white, and blue treat that looks impressive but takes almost no effort. They’re refreshing, easy to customize, and perfect for outdoor celebrations.
Ingredient Notes
I like using fresh strawberries that are firm and ripe because they stay on the skewers better.
Mini marshmallows help fill small gaps between fruit pieces and make the kabobs look fuller.
If you can find red, white, and blue star marshmallows, they instantly give these kabobs a patriotic theme without extra decorating.
Wash and thoroughly dry the berries before assembling. Excess moisture can make the marshmallows sticky.
How to Make It
Start by washing all the fruit and patting it completely dry with paper towels. Remove the strawberry stems and cut larger strawberries in half if needed.
Lay out the fruit and marshmallows in separate bowls. This makes assembly much faster, especially if you’re making several dozen kabobs.
Thread the strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, grapes, mini marshmallows, and star marshmallows onto wooden skewers in alternating red, white, and blue patterns. There isn’t a wrong way to do it, but I usually start and end with strawberries because they help keep everything secure.
As you finish each kabob, place it on a serving tray lined with parchment paper. Once all the skewers are assembled, refrigerate until ready to serve.
Things I Learned the Hard Way
The first time I made these, I assembled them too far in advance. The berries were still great, but the marshmallows became slightly sticky after sitting overnight.
If you’re serving outdoors on a hot day, keep them refrigerated until close to serving time.
People always ask if frozen fruit works. I don’t recommend it because thawed fruit tends to release too much moisture.
For parties, I usually make extra because these disappear faster than expected.
Storage & Serving Suggestions
Store the kabobs covered in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. They’re best served fresh the same day they’re made.
Serve them alongside lemonade, iced tea, grilled favorites, or a patriotic dessert table for a fun holiday presentation.
